UDP Obedience Level Patterns

To qualify for a leg in any level of UDP Obedience, a dog may not receive a maximum fault at any of the exercises. A perfect score is 200.  A qualifying score is a total of at least180 points.

 
UDP Obedience Introductory Level One - Set Pattern
On Leash- Treats Optional

Judge will call out commands as the team proceeds throughout the course.

Treats may be given at anytime during the Introductory Level course but should be done so in moderation.

  • Team begins in the sit position.
  • The judge will ask the handler if they are ready.
  • The handler responds with appropriate answer.
  • The handler gives the dog a signal to heel. The signal can be verbal, a signal, combination of verbal, treat and/or signal.
  • Team moves forward in a traditional heel position with the dog on the left side of the handler. 
  • Judge calls out commands as team reaches each exercise.
  • After the team completes the Stop and Sit exercise, a second person may come into the ring to hold the dog for the Wait and Recall exercise, or the team may chose to execute the exercise without assistance.
  • The Handler is to step a distance of 2-3 feet away from and in front of the dog before asking for the recall, and should hesitate slightly before calling the dog to handler, the dog is to remain on leash. The handler may praise the dog after the recall is completed. 
  • The judge will then ask the handler to return the dog to heel position
  • The dog is to return to a heel position, sitting on the left side of the handler, and wait for the command to heel forward.   
  • The team moves forward until asked to stop and sit at finish.
 
 
UDP Obedience Novice Level Two- Set Pattern
On Leash- Treats Optional

Judge will call out commands as the team proceeds throughout the course.

Treats may be given at the completion of each stationary exercise.

  • Team begins in the sit position.
  • The judge will ask the handler if they are ready.
  • The handler responds with appropriate answer.
  • The handler gives the dog a signal to heel. The signal can be verbal, a signal, combination of verbal, treat and/or signal.
  • Team moves forward in a traditional heel position with the dog on the left side of the handler. 
  • Judge calls out commands as team reaches each exercise.
  • Slow Pace: While heeling along one side of the ring the judge will ask for the team to Slow the pace. The team must slow down enough to be noticeable and continue at the slow pace until the judge calls for a normal pace.
  • Sit While Heeling:  exercise is performed while the dog is heeling, the handler is to stop forward motion and signal the dog to sit. There should be a fluid transition from the heel to the sit. The team remains looking forward with the dog seated on the left side of the handler until the command to heel is given by the judge.
  • About Turn: while heeling the team makes a 180 degree turn to the handlers right.
  • Sit Politely For Petting: exercise is begun from a sitting position with the dog seated on the left side of the handler. The judge or second person enters the ring and approaches the team. The handler may position themselves in front of the dog at this time or stay beside the dog.  The person asks it they may pet the dog and then gently pets the dog preferably under the chin or along the back. The dog is to remain seated quietly throughout the entire exercise. After a brief moment of petting the person steps away and the dog may be released from the sit and given praise and/or treats. The judge then asks the team to prepare to heel. The dog is to return to a heel position, sitting on the left side of the handler, and wait for the command to heel forward.
  • Wait and Recall: exercise is begun from a sitting position with the dog seated on the left side of the handler. The handler is to command the dog to wait and the handler is to step a distance of 4-6 feet away from and in front of the dog before asking for the recall, and should hesitate slightly before calling the dog to handler, the dog is to remain on leash.  The handler may praise the dog after the recall is completed. The judge will then ask the handler to return the dog to heel position. The dog is to return to a heel position, sitting on the left side of the handler, and wait for the command to heel forward. 
  • Down Stay: exercise, the judge will call for a Stop and Sit and then ask the handler to Down the dog. The handler will signal the dog to down and then pivot directly in front of the dog and remain there for a count of 30 seconds. The judge will say “Return” when 30 seconds is done.  The handler will then pivot back into position beside the dog.  The dog is to remain in a down stay until the handler has returned to his side and is released by the handler from the down. The handler may praise the dog after the Down Stay is completed. The judge will then ask the handler to return the dog to heel position. The dog is to return to a heel position, sitting on the left side of the handler, and wait for the command to heel forward. 
  • The team moves forward until asked to stop and sit at finish.

 
 
 

UDP Obedience Open Level Three- Set Pattern

On Leash-  No Treats (one free mulligan)

Judge will call out commands as the team proceeds throughout the course.

A treat may be used one time only (one free mulligan). 

  • Team begins in the sit position.
  • The judge will ask the handler if they are ready.
  • The handler responds with appropriate answer.
  • The handler gives the dog a signal to heel. The signal can be verbal, a signal, combination of verbal and/or signal.
  • Team moves forward in a traditional heel position with the dog on the left side of the handler. 
  • Judge calls out commands as team reaches each exercise.
  • Figure Eight Weave: While heeling the team approaches the figure eight exercise and continues the heel going to the left of the first object, and goes around the object, the team continues heeling toward the second object, goes around thee second object and then continues forward in the L pattern. This is a figure eight weave and should be done in a continuous and fluid motion while heeling.
  • Slow Pace: While heeling along one side of the ring the judge will ask for the team to slow the pace. The team must slowdown enough to be noticeable and continue at the slow pace until the judge calls for a normal pace.
  • Fast Pace: While heeling along one side of the ring the judge will ask for the team to fast the pace. The team must speedup the pace enough to be noticeable and continue at the fast pace until the judge calls for a normal pace.
  • Sit Stay: the judge will call for a Stop and Sit and then ask the handler to sit the dog. After the dog is in the sit position the handler will signal the dog to stay and the handler is to go6 ft in front of the dog and remain there for a count of 15 seconds. The judge will say “Return” when 15 seconds is done.  The handler will then walk back into position beside the dog.  The dog is to remain in a sit stay while the handler returns to the dog’s side, and wait for the command to heel forward.
  • About Turn: While heeling the team makes a 180 degree turn to the handlers right. Handler turns away from the dog.
  • Stand Politely For Petting: exercise is begun from a standing position with the dog standing on the left side of the handler. The judge or second person enters the ring and approaches the team. The handler may position themselves in front of the dog at this time or stay beside the dog.  The person asks if they may pet the dog and then gently pets the dog preferably under the chin or along the back. The dog is to remain standing quietly throughout the entire exercise. After a brief moment of petting the person steps away and the dog must remain standing. The judge then asks the team to prepare to heel. The dog is to return to a heel position, sitting on the left side of the handler, and wait for the command to heel forward.
  • U Turn: While heeling the team makes a 180 degree turn to the handlers left. Handler turns toward the dog.
  • Sit While Heeling:  exercise is performed while the dog is heeling, the handler is to stop forward motion and signal the dog to sit.There should be a fluid transition from the heel to the sit. The team remains looking forward with the dog seated on the left side of the handler until the command to heel is given by the judge.
  • Down Stay –One Minute:  the judge will call for a Stop and then ask the handler to Down the dog.. After the dog is in the Down position the handler will signal the dog to Stay and the handler is to go 6 ft in front of the dog and remain there for a count of 60 seconds (one minute).The judge will say “Return” when 60 seconds is done.  The handler will then walk back into position beside the dog.  The dog is to remain in a down stay while the handler returns to the dog’s side, and wait for the command to heel forward. 
  • Sit or Down with a 6 ft Recall: exercise is begun from a sit or down position with the dog on the left side of the handler. The handler is to command the dog to wait and the handler is to step a distance of 6 feet away from and in front of the dog before asking for the recall, and should hesitate slightly before calling the dog to handler, the dog is to remain on leash. The dog is to return in front of the handler and sit in front of the handler.  The handler is to ask the dog for a finish either to the left or right of the handler, the dog is to return to a heel position, sitting on the left side of the handler. The course is now completed.
